For those of you out there that own a computer (i assume that you do if you are reading this article), keeping your computer secure isn't always easy, or cheap. Well, now it can be both! First off, viruses arn't the only things you need to watch for. There are hackers, and spyware and Malware. The first thing that we will work on protecting ourselves against is Spyware and Malware. These are probably the hardest to defend against, and can be the most dangerous. There are 3 programs that you need to absolutly keep yourself safe against these. First program, Ad-Aware SE. This can be found for free at http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-Free/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 . Ad-aware scans your computer for infections. The second program taht does the exact same thing, is Spybot Search & Destroy. Together these program can find almost every Spyware or Maleware program. You can obtain Spybot here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html . The last program is Spywareblaster. This program does not scan your computer, however, it implements blocks into Internet Explorer and Firefox that keep spyware from getting onto your machine. It can be obtained at: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html .
Now, onto hackers. The best way to keep out hackers is to use a firewall. The windows firewall is great, but some people arn't using XP or Vista, or just don't feel secure enough. The best free firewall out there, in my opinion, is Comodo. A download can be found at: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Last but not least, viruses (this includes worms and trojans). I have tested a lot of anti-virus software, and one really stands out. That is AVG. AVG Free is the best free anti-virus out there. It even competes with Norton and Mcafee. It has the most up-to-date virus definitions I have seen, there has even been time where I have seen AVG release a new update every day. Norton only releases theirs about once per week. You can obtain a copy of AVG at http://free.grisoft.com/
There you have it. I can not guarentee your computers saftey still, but it will be a lot more secure. The best part is, you didn't spend a penny!!
